Fun Things to do in Cranborne Chase for Families with Kids

My family and I are based in Somerset yet sitting close to the Wiltshire & Dorset border we’re lucky to have Cranborne Chase just under an hour’s drive away. Made up of 380 square miles, it is - rightly so - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as well as an International Dark Sky Reserve (how cool is that?).

This picturesque region, straddling the counties of Wiltshire, Dorset and Hampshire is a hidden gem within southern England. Boasting a rich history dating back to the Neolithic period, the area offers beautiful rolling hills, ancient woodlands and charming tucked away villages such as:

Cranborne Chase is definitely a spot for nature and fauna lovers as well as history buffs. Families seeking a blend of outdoor adventure, cultural experiences and perhaps a quieter rural alternative also like to visit.

With all that I’ve listed below some of my family’s favourite things to do in the Cranborne Chase area, I hope it’s of help!

1) Explore the Ancient Wardour Castle

Wardour Castle, located near Tisbury, is a striking ruined castle that’s steeped in history. Originally built in the 14th century, it was twice laid siege to and attacked during the English Civil War leaving it ruined. A new castle, actually a country house, was ultimately built whilst the old ruined castle was integrated into the parkland.

Now owned and managed by English Heritage, kids will love exploring the nooks and crannies of the castle ruins, while parents can enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The site often hosts family-friendly events and reenactments, making it an educational, fun day out with loads of things to do.

2) Go Wildlife Spotting at Martin Down Nature Reserve

Martin Down is a significant 350 acre nature reserve that’s well known for its rich biodiversity. Families can enjoy walking trails that weave through chalk grasslands, home to rare wildflowers, orchids, bees and butterflies. The soil is chalky so it’s tough for grass to grow but flowers thrive here.

The nature reserve always feels rather ancient to us, there are mounds everywhere perhaps once hosting a large local tribe. Who knows, though it’s sheep that dominate here now.

Take your binoculars as the reserve attracts an array of birds and don’t forget to bring a picnic too, though do remember to take your rubbish home with you!

Created by General Pitt Rivers in the late 19th century, these Victorian gardens feature ornate buildings, peacocks, and a lovely tea room. Originally created to inspire his workers as well as guests, by 1899 the gardens were visited by 44,000 people a year.

After the owner passed away the gardens were closed but in 1995 his great grandson restored the now overgrown gardens and reopened the 11 acre site to the public.

The open spaces are perfect for children to run around and explore, and the gardens often host family-friendly events and festivals.

A delightful spot for a family day out but do note it is a private wedding venue too so check before you go that it is open to the public as on some days it is closed for wedding functions.

The gardens typically open from 10am to 4pm Sundays to Wednesdays (closed in Winter) and there’s a coffee lodge to grab some refreshments. Dogs are permitted in the Coffee Lodge but not in the gardens (due to the presence of peacocks).

Head over to Shaftesbury, a charming town on the edge of Cranborne Chase and once there make your way to the Shaftesbury Abbey Museum, it’s definitely worth it. The museum overlooks the town and offers a fascinating glimpse into the area's medieval past and the story of King Alfred’s daughter, who founded the abbey in 888 A.D. Sadly the Abbey was torn down courtesy of King Henry VIII, leaving it ruined.

Still, children will enjoy the interactive exhibits and the beautiful abbey gardens, which are perfect for a leisurely stroll or run around. The museum is free to enter, has plenty of friendly volunteers to help and is dog friendly to boot!

Cranborne Chase is renowned for its walking trails, and the RPSB's Garston Woods is a must-visit. The ancient woodlands are a haven for wildlife, and the well-marked trails are suitable for all ages. Be sure to pack sturdy shoes and a sense of adventure as you explore the magical woodland scenery.

This unique attraction is perfect for hands-on learning, certainly for kids of all ages (including the big ones!).

The Cranborne Ancient Technology Centre offers workshops and demonstrations on ancient crafts and technologies, from pottery and chopping wood to fire-making and making hazel fences. It's an engaging way for children to learn about history and archaeology in a fun, interactive setting.

They really are set up to host school children on educational trips, a good thing for sure, but they also open to the public in the months of March, July and September. Be sure to check their website before you decide to head over just to make sure they are open to the public.
